DAMN!! Can't believe my group fail in the egg project. We did use most of the steps in the planning process. Such as defining our goals, determining our resources, and making a tactical plan. What we should've done was making alternate strategies as well. We had a few plans at first, but they got shut down because the engineering of it will probably lead to disaster. Eventually we had one plan, of which everyone agreed on. We had a pretty good design for our egg protection, but it could've definitely been improved (because the egg still cracked =/).
The idea of this assignment was to 'think outside of the box'. We didn't even go up to the table where the egg and tape was to examine the sizes. We simply gave an estimate of the sizes for our design. The group that used the tape as a rope for the egg, thus reducing the length of the fall was rather clever. It's thinking in that nature that will make the difference. Overall the best and most memorable class I've ever had. Definitely looking forward to future classes (can't believe I just said that, but hey, it was FUN :]).

Our group committed almost the same mistake as your group we sort of under estimated the activity and over estimated our ability. Yet like you say it was fun and we did actually learn something valuable that we might not have the chance to learn again.
ReplyDeleteMy group had alternative strategies but failed to use them in the end. We stuck with our plan even though we knew it was not going to work out because we didn't have enough time to execute the alternative. I agree with you, it was the best and most memorable class I have ever had also.
ReplyDeleteI think, it was really impossible to save the egg!)))) The only one idea which I have, taking to the considerations the materials which we had( very light straws for the cage and very heavy egg for such cage) I can only say, that we could just instead of dropping the egg to the floor, carefully, using enough tape, put the caged egg to the floor. THUS, It WOULD NOT crash:))))))))
ReplyDeleteI agree with You and Nina, It is the best class I have ever had before! Very COOL professor and nice group!
I totally agree with you because my team didn't even check the size of the egg or straw in the planning stage. My team was in a rush and didn't think out side of the box. I'm looking forward to future classes too but not the exam part :)
ReplyDeleteHey, I'm just curious, did any of the groups have one of the designs that were shut down? A lot of the designs that I saw were similar to designs that I wanted to do.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I think the biggest problem was that he told us what we could and couldn't do and everyone assumed that what he said we could do was only what we could do. Like he didn't say anything about looking at the egg, so we assumed we weren't supposed to...
Most of the time, thinking outside of the box is because people don't follow the rules. Like the rope tape (I was in that group), some of us thought it was allowed and some of us thought it wasn't.
Haha I loved your groups idea. It was pretty cool that you were able to manipulate the egg cage system in a way that you think out of the box. I would have even tried to make it so the egg was like an inch off the ground maybe by tape the straws together
