Blog Topic #3
The class on 10/14/09 was crazy as hell. There were people screaming across the room, various people standing up and even more people just completely dazed and confuse. I was definitely one of those people (dazed and confused). I was in the "avoidance" state at first because I feel that the class will be able to make a decision, of which I would then agree with them because it's what the majority would want. However, when it seemed like no progress was being made and with the time running out, I'd joined in the frenzy. From the 5 ways of behavior slide, I don't think there were any "compete to win" behavior, the tone of the whole process was pretty much "compromise" and "collaborating", where the plan was to split up into smaller groups and then combine our ideas, this of course didn't worked out as planned. Even though it was unrealistic, to have 100% of the class to agree on a decision, it did show how difficult it is to make a decision with a large scale of people. The professor was very cynical by purposely trying to make individuals turn against the class, by saying, "you don't have to agree..." This made thing extremely difficult. It sucked that the class ended without deciding on the formatting of the test, due to few individuals, but at least we were able to get some changes out of it =/ Better something than nothing.

I agree with the fact that noone was trying to compete to win. we were all kind of compromising and collaborating with each other. I was collaborating all the way and it did turn out to be one of the most difficult decision making assignment.
ReplyDeleteYeah, since everyone has different backgrounds, values, it is impossible to make everybody fully agree on one decision. I think compromise and collaboration are necessary in every decision making process.
ReplyDeleteCompromise and collaboration are definitely key to anything working out when it comes to a group decision that involves this many people. If it were a majority rules instead of an all or nothing, I think that it would have gone smoothly.
ReplyDeleteHey,
ReplyDeleteI think I would have enjoyed taking part in this class activity despite the chaos and the screaming that came along with it. And all that chaos definitely shows the difficulty of coming to a concensus when the interests of so many different people are involved. But at last, I believe everyone felt that it was worthwhile because the class did gain some benefits from it.
Hey, I agree that everyone was compromising. I am not so sure about collaborating, because even though we did mention breaking into small groups, that never happened. I agree with you that it was too bad we could not get a consensus on the formatting of the next test. That would have been good to take advantage of, but if we were given the opportunity to do it again I'm sure we would succeed. Either way, I think it was a good exercise looking back on it.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with you. I felt like the plan to split up in smaller groups to incorporate our ideas into the decision making did work because my groups idea was part of the final decision. I think some people were bullied into making a decision but in the end it all worked out. It is better to have something than nothing at all because time was running out and we didn't even have a decision at all. This was a good project that everyone can learn from.
ReplyDeleteThere was definitely a little bit of every type of decision-making going on in the class. Some may not have been as obvious as the collaboration or compromising, but there were definitely some strong-willed individuals that made sure their big mouths were heard. Others who did not want certain things were accomodating probably because they wanted the whole process to end quicker.
ReplyDeleteIn regards to the formatting of the next test, I think everyone wanted something slightly different. It just seemed like most people wanted the same thing because most were just saying yes to whatever anyone proposed to shut everyone up. Plus it is better that the professor just make the test as he pleases because we don't really have too much right to tell him how to test us.
